Willington on the Way February-2026
February Reflections from the Stove… or the Keyboard
Well, here we are—it’s February 6th, and I’m sitting at my computer, coffee close at hand, trying to write an entertaining and informative newsletter. February always feels like a pivot point to me. One foot is still planted firmly in last year’s accomplishments, while the other is already stepping into this year’s plans. It’s that in-between time when reflection meets anticipation.
I sometimes think about how this might have been done in the “old days” here in Willington. I can picture the menfolk gathering at the general store, perched on wooden chairs around a pot-bellied stove, telling stories of fishing trips and hunting feats—each retelling just a little better than the last. Meanwhile, the women would be in the parlor or living room, quilting, doing needlepoint, swapping recipes, and no doubt exchanging news just as important as anything discussed at the store. It sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?
Fast-forward to the 21st century, and instead of a wood-burning stove, I’ve got a computer screen glowing back at me—and instead of tall tales, I’ve got a keyboard and a blinking cursor waiting for inspiration. Still, the heart of it all hasn’t changed. Storytelling, community, and shared purpose are very much alive here at Willington On The Way.
All kidding aside, I can honestly say that our volunteers did a spectacular job this past year. So much was accomplished that I could easily fill this entire page just listing projects, improvements, and behind-the-scenes work. What makes it even more special is that so much of it happened quietly—people showing up, pitching in, and doing what needed to be done simply because they care about this place.
Before I go any further, I’m very pleased to announce that we have three new volunteers joining us. We welcome a husband-and-wife team, Sherri and Jim Davis, along with Dan Ressue. Jim and Dan will be helping at the History Center, while Sherri has joined the Bookshop. We’re thrilled to have all three of you on board—fair warning, though: volunteering here has been known to be contagious!
As we look ahead to the new year, we are already hard at work planning our next big event—Historic Willington Day, scheduled for April 25, 2026. The volunteers have come forward with an impressive lineup of ideas and suggestions. If we manage to implement even half of what’s been proposed, we are going to have an absolutely spectacular day. The creativity, enthusiasm, and commitment shown by our team continues to amaze me.
Finally, a big heartfelt thank-you to our donors and to everyone involved in our fundraising efforts. Your support—whether through time, talent, or treasure—keeps Willington moving forward. What we do here is truly a group effort, and it’s a privilege to be part of such a dedicated and caring community.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I may step away from the computer and imagine that old pot-bellied stove one more time… but I promise I’ll be back at the keyboard soon.
